Using Apparel As Positive PR

When you are a member of a fraternity or sorority, getting your chapter’s name out there isn’t always an easy task. However, one of the easiest and best ways to do this is to BE VISIBLE using apparel.

There is “strength in numbers”. Designate a day that your organization wears its letters on the same day. Consider giving prizes or recognition to the most polished looking brother or sister.

Involve social media!! Consider having a group hash tag that members can use on Instagram… for example #piphipolished or # polishedpiphi. That way you can search all of your members who are using the hash tag/and find them all at one time.

Apparel is also a GREAT way to display your values, open motto, or other ideals that you want those around you to be aware of. As members of Greek life, “living your values” is something you should strive to do each day. Apparel can help to make this possible, visible, and effortless!

A great example of this is, philanthropy tees. You have to ask yourself, “What is most important? Our “casino night” themed philanthropy, or the fact that we will be able to use the proceeds to help those in our community?” Themes are fine and frankly, they are fun!! But look to find balance. Use color and innovative designs to help set your event apart. Steer clear of any saying that could perceived in poor taste. Remember, a passerby can learn a lot about your organization simply by reading your shirt.

Think outside of the box!! Wear your letters in non-traditional or innovative ways!
Bid Day/Summer rush shirts are important, but they aren’t the only pieces of apparel that the chapter should concern themselves with each year. There are many other garments that matter throughout the year, and all of these have the potential to help your chapter work toward promoting positive recognition on campus. T-shirts and sweatshirts are pretty standard Greek gear, however coats, jackets, vests, hats, ear warmers, and sunglasses can help distinguish your members no matter what the temperature is.

Take photos! Any time you have members from your chapter in the same place and dressed with letters… TAKE A PHOTO! Photos are a great way to commemorate events, but can also be used to update chapter websites, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter or Instagram. Recent photos keep your chapter looking involved, creative, and relevant on campus.
